All things Yummy – A

I’m a bit of a food nerd.  I love food {don’t we all} but I’m especially obsessed with trying and learning about things that are good for me.  We only get one body in this life, so we better do our best to take care of it and make it last!!  In all of the research and reading I’ve done over the years on this topic, the number one thing that always rings true is unprocessed…straight  from the earth is always best.  You can’t go wrong with things that were naturally created by mother nature herself.  {although these days you have to make sure man hasn’t stepped in and added chemicals & toxic nasty things to these foods}  Mother nature is one smart lady, she has incorporated the things we need to keep our bodies balanced and healthy AND she has put them together in the right combinations that make them the most effective in our bodies {one of the reasons why you get so much more benefit from eating these healthy foods then you do from taking individual supplements}  I believe its entirely possible to not only prevent disease but to reverse it by eating the right combinations of foods!!  {check out this book for more information}.  Here are just a few of these amazing {and yummy} healers!!

Acai

acai-berry-bowl

  • Pronounced {ah-sigh-ee}
  • Highest antioxidant food value currently known to man
  • COX-2 inhibitor and anti-inflammatory
  • Has no sugar content
  • Highest of all fruits in anthocyanins – the anti-inflammatory phytochemical that fights free radicals that cause cancer and aging
  • Lower cholesterol beause of their fatty acid profile
  • Great way to get the benefits is with the acai powder {with no added sugar} – can be mixed with water as a refreshing drink

Almonds

Almonds-4

  • Very benefitial for people suffering from any lung disease
  • High in calcium and manganese
  • Highest nut in vitamin E {good for your skin}
  • Good for relieving constipation
  • Raw organic almond butter is a great replacement for peanut butter in your diet {ALL peanut butter contains high concentrations of the cancer causing fungus aflatoxin!}

Apples

005

  • Skin & seeds of apple contain hundreds of different phytochemicals that fight disease
  • Seeds contain a blast of phytochemicals,  but also a “friendly” dose of special cyanide that doesn’t hurt you but goes after and kills any cancer cells in your body.  As long as the seeds are blended or eaten with the source apple they came from they are safe and highly beneficial
  • Apple pectin is a soluble fiber that is a very good artery cleanser
  • Helps lower cholesterol
  • Cleanses the colon

Asparagus

3492947180_4859131bea_b-625x416

  • “The mighty cancer fighter”
  • has the highest levels of Glutathione of any food – a phytochemical composed of three different amino acids that bind to fat soluble toxins & removes poisons from the body.  It is also the primary ingredient responsible for phase 2 enzyme, which is the liver’s main detoxification outlet.
  • Involved in the bodies mercury and heavy metal detoxification process
  • Excellent source of folic acid
  • Cleans out the kidneys {hence the sometimes stinky pee}
  • Healing properties of asparagus actually increase when lightly steamed

Avocado

avocado-x

  • 20% living fat which decreases your bad cholesterol and increases the good, also  helps the body naturally loose weight
  • Very high in glutathione; the liver’s most potent detoxifier
  • Naturally lowers cholesterol {because of beta-sitosterol}
  • Contains soluble fiber which removes plaque from the arteries
  • Contains omega-9 fatty acids {oleic acid}
  • Perfect food for lowering or eliminating heart disease
  • If you can blend up the seed {♥ my Blendtec!} The seed contains the most soluble fiber of any food on earth!!

Talk about amazing gifts from mother nature!!  What’s great about these foods, is that most of them are probably already on your list of things you eat.  They are easy to get and for most of them very inexpensive.  So find ways to incorporate these healing foods into your diets and pat yourself on the back knowing that you are not only filling your belly with good natural things, you are healing your body and showing it some much needed love!!

I Heart my blender ♥

It’s official…I am just going to come out and say it…i LOVE my blender {and Fridays}!!

I recently told you about a Qigong Seminar we attended where we learned all sorts of wonderful things including a super interesting chat about healing your body with food.  {your favorite Food Factiods are coming straight from this seminar}  One of the ways we have started getting the most out of the foods we put in our bodies is with 3 horsepower blending.  3 horsepower blending breaks out the phytochemicals hidden in the stems, skin, seeds, rinds, fibers and flesh of fruits and vegetables.  This process allows your body to absorb the maximum level of nutrients from your food!

The blender {from Blendtec} is so amazing that it can literally destroy an I-phone {check out this video…its insanity!!} I mean come on…how much more can you break down all those food goodies for your body to enjoy!!??!  I believe the benefit to blending vs juicing is not only are you breaking down the food particles to a micron level, you are including the parts of the food {the seeds, skin, pulp, etc} that contain tons and tons of nutrients but are wasted in juicing.

Now this blender is definitely an investment {about $400 buck-a-roos at amazon.com} but we looked at this purchase as an investment in our health.  Spend the money now on a fabulous blender {and on good fresh fruits and veggies} and SAVE money in the future on doctor’s visits, horrible drugs and everything else that comes with unhealthiness!!  And let me tell you we started to almost immediately feel a difference in our overall energy level and health!  If i miss a day of smoothie…i can tell!!  Another great thing about this blender is that because it can literally destroy things…you don’t have to worry about doing too much prep work to your foods!  Just wash and drop!

What works best for us is to start the day off with one of these lovelies.  After our morning Goodbelly & a glass of tea {my personal favorite is Yerba Matte} its SMOOTHIE time!  We have tried a bunch of smoothie “recipes” {most from this smoothie book} but a few of our favorites are the #1 Recommended, Power Beet & Good Circulation smoothies.

#1 Recommended Smoothie

  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 8 oz organic strawberries
  • 1 ear corn cut from cob
  • 1/2 avocado with seed
  • 2 fresh mint tops w/stem
  • 1 node fresh cilantro
  • 1 oz. goji berries
  • 1/4 small red beet
  • 1/2 organic cucumber
  • 1/2 apple w/ seeds
  • 1/2 lime w/ pith
  • 1″ fresh ginger root
  • we also add coconut oil & maca root powder!

Simply throw all the freshly washed goodies in the blender, “pulse” for 15 seconds, then press the up arrow to Speed 10 for  minimum of 2 cycles.  {this makes 2 servings of smoothie}

Rollin in the Mud

Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend!!  How much do you LOVE that extra day?!?!?!  We were pumped to have a much needed weekend at home.  An officially planned NO-plan weekend!!

So last week I mentioned {here} that I spent a little time rollin in the mud last weekend…curious?

WARRIOR DASH!!

Warrior Dash is a crazy obstacle run that takes you dredging thru the mud, climbing over 20 foot walls and jumping over fire.  We headed up north to join my dad, stepmom and a few friends to run thru the obstacles and shlep thru the mud and it was AWESOME!!  I had no idea what to expect and was a little worried that my puny weak not so strong upper body strength would be a problem.  There were definitely a few obstacles that were a challenge but i’m happy to say i made it thru, completed all the obstacles and ran through the finish line with a  smile on my face {and apparently mud on my teeth}!   We sported a few crazy hair do’s and some warrior paint but there were some that went all out…tutus, wedding dresses…even umpa lumpas!!  Next year we WILL be rocking some sort of costume awesome-ness {Any suggestions??}  Saying that you are dirty when you cross the finish line is an understatement…there is mud in places you never thought possible. {all of my race clothes ended up in the trash!}  We “rinsed off” in the lake afterwards, most of us donated our shoes and headed over to the after party for a few beers, a little food and some live music.  Overall…a rockin good time and something we will Definitely be doing again next year!!

So you ready for next year?!?!  So much fun rollin in the MUD!

Qigong

We recently attended a 4 day seminar in Asheville called Qi Revolution and it was an absolutely amazing experience!  Before going to the seminar I really didn’t know much of anything about Qigong.  I knew it had something to do with Qi {energy} and some of it looked a bit like Tai Chi but that was pretty much all I had going into it.  While all that is true…there was so much that I didn’t realize about the practice.

The word Qigong broken down means:  Qi {or chi} life energy, life-force or energy flow & Gong {or kung} means work or practice.  So literally it means the work and practice of energy flow.  There were over 500 people attending the conference and right off the bat you could just feel the good energy and vibes in the space.  The seminar lasted for 4 days {we unfortunately had to leave on the 3rd day to get back to work} and was broken down into different segments throughout the day.  Some of the things we explored were:

  • Qigong forms & Qigong walking
  • Meditation
  • Breath Work & Energy Healing
  • Spiritual discussions
  • 5 elements {and how they relate to us as individuals & in relationships}
  • Food Healing

I’m still learning of course, but the information we discussed and the things we experienced have made this girl excited to learn more!!  As I’ve started to share my experiences with my loved ones I’ve been asked a lot of very interesting questions, some of which i can answer and a lot that i’m not so sure of yet.  One such question {thank you dad} was the difference between Tai Chi and Qigong. I am no expert on either {especially less about Tai Chi} but I found this quote that simplified things for me a bit.

“When you cultivate balance and harmony within yourself, or in the world — that is Tai Chi. When you work and play with the essence of energy of life, nature and the universe for healing, clarity and inner peace — that is Qigong.”

Dr. Roger Jahnke, OMD

I will go into more detail about some of the things in future blog posts {Check out the blog feature “Food Factoid” for info and tips on foods and food healing} but overall this experience was a life changer!  I learned so much, experienced things I never  thought possible and walked away from the weekend a totally changed person.  We have started to incorporate many of the things we learned over the weekend and have already started to see changes in our lives.  I can’t wait to pass on some of that inspiration to anyone that is interested!
Check out these links for more on the Qi Revolution Seminar and general information about Qigong.

Good Belly

If there is one thing in my life that has always been a problem for me…its my tummy, for as long as I can remember I’ve had issues.  Not only is poor digestion a pain in the butt to deal with {no pun intended} its also not good for your health!  Did you know that 70% of your immune system lives in your digestive tract!?!

So healthy digestive track = Strong Immune system.

Now as some of you might know I’ve tried all sorts of things over the years in an attempt to improve my digestion…some of them a bit crazier then others.  While I’ve seen some improvement with the various wacky things I’ve tried nothing has really gotten my system in line.  Recently the hubs and I attended a Qigong conference in Asheville {more on that to come}  and one of the major topics discussed at the seminar was how to use foods to heal your body {check out “Food Factoids” for some of the food info we’ve learned}.  One of the most recommended things at this seminar was a product called Good Belly.  Good Belly is a liquid probiotic that tastes delicious and is PACKED full of the good bacteria your belly needs to stay nice and balanced and happy!

Pro-biotic means “for life”.  Probiotics are living microorganisms that have a beneficial effect on the body.  In order to be deemed a probiotic, the strain of bacteria found in the supplement must be shown to survive the stomach’s acidic environment in order to reach the rest of the digestive tract where it does the majority of its work.  Which is why GoodBelly is so great!!  The strain of probiotic {Lp299v} is tough enough to survive the stomach acid in order to reach the rest of the bodies intestinal tract.  Good Belly is dairy-free, soy-free and vegan.  But most importantly it promotes Healthy Digestion…which we now know equals strong immune system!

Although I’m still working on things and my stomach is by no means at 100%…I have seen HUGE improvements and am very hopeful that sticking with this will help me bring my crazy stomach a little bit closer to “normal”.

Fabulous Fitness Find

Happy Friday!!  I am READY for the weekend and hoping this cloudy Atlanta weather goes away…I’m ready for some sunshine!!  Do you have anything fun planned for the weekend??  Here’s a little Friday motivation for ya ~

We all know that exercise is good for us.  Good for maintaining a healthy body weight, good for keeping our heart healthy, good for strengthening our muscles and increasing our endurance.  just good good good.  I love that feeling of finishing a truly butt kicking workout, knowing that i’ve done something great for myself BUT for most of us finding the time to get in a truly good workout on a daily basis is tough.

So what if i were to tell you that there is a FREE website that offers daily workouts you can do at home, most of which are 15 minutes or less.  WHAT?!?!  I know…i couldn’t believe it myself when i first stumbled on Bodyrock.tv.  But let me tell you these workouts might be short but they are INSANE!!

First off…I know…that picture is ridiculous…but she is for real…its not photoshopped!!  Possibly motivating you just a little bit more seeing that pic {or irritating you}?  Bodyrock is an interval based system which is  basically short crazy burst like workouts that get your muscles and your endurance in overdrive!  The workouts are 4-6 exercises that you repeat 2-3 rounds using the intervals of 50 seconds on / 10 seconds off.  There are a few different types of equipment they use on the website but i’ve been able to find alternatives for most exercises without purchasing any of the equipment.  I guarantee that you will be sweating, panting and ready to fall on the floor after only 12 minutes!!  {all of that is a good thing by the way}

The fact that all I need is 15 or 20 minutes even on my busiest day to get in a little workout makes it almost impossible to come up with an excuse not to exercise {although some days I get really creative with my reasons not to}.  So give it a whirl!

Food Factiod: Strawberries

I love a good factoid, so much so that my husband often refers to me as “factoid johnson”.  One of my favorite kinds of factoids are those that pertain to health, eating right and just taking care of yourself in general.  We recently attended a Qigong seminar in Asheville {more on that to come} and a big part of the seminar was about conquering diseases thru food.  Eating the right combinations of things to bring balance and wellness to your body.  So I figured since we are on this little food healing journey I should share some of this info with my favorite people…You!

First featured food…Strawberries.  You know you love them…they are sweet, refreshing and just plain delicious!  But did you know that strawberries contain a major phytochemical content including high ellagic acid that specifically protects your heart, are anti-cancer and an anti-inflammatory?!  Who knew!!  Strawberries are also a natural COX inhibitor {COX = enzyme cyclo-oxygenase}.  A what?  COX is an enzyme that naturally occurs in our bodies but in over abundance, this enzyme can cause inflammation like in arthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis & cancer.  The strawberry’s natural COX inhibitor properties have a similar effect on the body as asprin or ibuprofen in reducing this inflammation.

I think we can all agree that these healing properties mixed with the yumminess of Strawberries makes them a fabulous food to include in your daily diet.  But {always has to be a but doesn’t there} traditional strawberries are also sprayed with more pesticides per acre then any other fruit and because of the porous like surface of a strawberry these pesticides easily seep into the strawberry making it impossible to completely wash off those harmful chemicals.  GROSS!!!  So the solution to this nasty problem; Always always ALWAYS eat organic strawberries. {problem solved!}  If you pick one item on your grocery list to buy organic make it this berry.  Fruits and Veggies that have a more tough outer skin or that you remove the outer layer are less likely to be saturated with pesticides.

I think its safe to say we probably already have our favorite ways to enjoy these little guys, just pop them as a snack, cut them up in salads or put them in your morning smoothie.  Here are a few delicious recipes using this brilliant little berry that might be worth trying strawberry bruschetta {featured on the blog Annie’s Eats}, strawberry yogurt cake  {from A spicy Perspective } which also contains one of my favorite ingredients Greek Yogurt {from this post} or the classic chocolate covered strawberries {check out T Time Chic for an easy way to cover those berries with chocolate goodness}

Moral of this story…eat your Strawberries {organic of course}!!

“Get Ready to Sweat”

I’m a yoga girl.  Always have been.  There is something so calming and spiritual about it but at the same time its a killer workout that keeps you flexible and strong.  There are all sorts of different types of yoga and depending on your goals and expectations you can really take it in any direction.  It’s all about balance, strength, breathing and calm under pressure.

One of my absolute favorite kinds of yoga is hot yoga.  {For anyone in the Atlanta area I totally recommend Atlanta Hot Yoga}  Now hot yoga is no joke; the room is kept at a balmy pleasant 102 degrees-ish.  Sounds ridiculous I know, but the heat creates an instant boost in your flexibility and a sort of cleansing feeling you get after releasing all that sweat…it is just fantastic.  You follow a consistent series of movements and poses that everyone from a yoga beginner to an expert can pick up.  By the end of the class you leave soaked in sweat feeling like you’ve stretched your muscles like Gumby, possibly lost a few pounds in sweat, given your body a good cleaning out and have an overwhelming sense of peace and balance.

A few things to remember before going to your hot yoga class:

  • Don’t eat anything heavy 1-2 hours before the class {trust me on this one…heat + full belly = No good!}
  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after the class
  • Wear comfortable workout clothing that wicks moisture and that you can move in {but not so loose that it trips you up}
  • Be sure to arrive a bit before the class start time to scope out your spot and get all set up before the class starts
  • Bring your yoga mat, a mat towel {or large bath towel}, a sweat towel and water

Now make sure you are prepared for the “quiet time” during the duration of the class.  Most teachers will stress the importance of no talking; it not only keeps you from disturbing those around you but allows you to focus on your body and dive a little deeper into the experience.  Don’t be surprised if it takes a little while for your body to adjust to the hot temperature.  My first time took me a few minutes to get used to the heat; initially I had the feeling of my heart racing a bit but after a few calming breaths I was back in business.  If you experience any odd things from the heat, simply sit down on your mat for a few seconds to catch your breath and you will be adjusted and back to it in no time.

So the next time you are looking for a change up in your workout routine or need a little extra peace in your life…give hot yoga a try.  You will not be disappointed!  {and let me know if you need a yoga buddy!}

Coconut Oil

So i’m just going to come out and say it…no sense in hiding it any longer…I’m in LOVE with Coconut Oil!  Its true…i’m not afraid to admit it.  Coconut Oil is…well…aWeSoMe!  It’s not just for cooking {which it is totally fantastic for…by the way} but there are sooo many more uses for it!

I started my love affair with Coconut Oil while researching a Candida Cleanse {more about that in future posts}.  The cleanse called for taking 1 spoonful of Coconut oil a day…which at first sounded…well gross…but actually its sort of yummy {i think} and wasn’t gross at all!  Because Coconut Oil is a natural anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-fungal and antiviral, its basically anti all the bad stuff!  So not only does it taste yummy {not at all a sweet coco-nutty flavor like you might be used to…its very mild} but its health benefits make it a great choice for all your cooking needs!  A lot of the recipes included in this cleanse called for Coconut oil in place of olive or vegetable oil.  It’s a much more stable oil {its room temperature state is actually as a solid} and can be used at higher cooking temperatures without any concern.

So now we’ve mastered cooking with it {I’ve literally used it in place of other oils for almost all types of cooking} Let’s talk other uses.  Actually just this past month i decided to try out another one of its many uses {that i found reading this blog post}.  When the seasons change my skin tends to go a little haywire.  Parts are dry and itchy, other parts over moisturized and oily; its almost impossible to find a balance so my face ends up looking like a grease ball and a dry flake ball all at the same time?!?!?  Enter the lovely Coconut oil.  After reading about its moisturizing benefits i thought…what the heck.  It can’t hurt right.  So i gave it a whirl and spread it all over my face and neck.  To my surprise it wasn’t overly greasy {although it did take a few minutes to really soak in} and my skin instantly felt better {and smelled pretty yummy too!}  So fast forward to today and my skin is sooo happy!  Its finding its natural balance…no more greasy flaky ball…and my pores have actually cleared up and less blemishes too!  Who would have thought spreading oil all over your face could actually make you break out less?!

So moral of this story…Why not give Coconut oil a shot…

  • try it out in your favorite recipe
  • slather it on your dry skin
  • put a <little> in your palm and use to tame those crazy frizzy fly aways
  • swallow a spoonful to aid digestion and help with an upset stomach
  • remove chewing gum from your hair after that crazy gum tossing war?!
  • clean and polish your finest pair of leather shoes

Seriously i could go on forever…check out this blog for 80 different uses for this wondrous oil!!

Cheers

~ Jillian

{this post was done of my own free will…there were no coconuts hurt in the making…and I was not threatened by any evil coconut oil pushers…i really do just enjoy the stuff}

P.s. It’s usually pretty easy to find in most grocery stores and health stores.  In my local Kroger I actually found it in the green section with all the natural vitamins and supplements.  The brand I am currently enjoying is Nature’s Way Organic Coconut Oil {Pure Extra Virgin}.  So don’t be discouraged if you don’t see it right away…ask someone at the store, it might be hiding!

P.s. s. Make sure to always buy food grade Coconut oil {even if you aren’t actually eating it}; its just a cleaner and healthier option!
