Monday ~er~ Thursday Mantra

For some reason these short work weeks seem to always be slightly crazier…and feel longer?!  Maybe payback for enjoying an extra day of relaxation!!  On my way in to the old officina this morning the storage place across the street offered yet another brilliant piece of wisdom that I thought I would share with you.  Hope you are having a great week, we are almost there {make the MOST of it!!}

Rollin in the Mud

Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend!!  How much do you LOVE that extra day?!?!?!  We were pumped to have a much needed weekend at home.  An officially planned NO-plan weekend!!

So last week I mentioned {here} that I spent a little time rollin in the mud last weekend…curious?

WARRIOR DASH!!

Warrior Dash is a crazy obstacle run that takes you dredging thru the mud, climbing over 20 foot walls and jumping over fire.  We headed up north to join my dad, stepmom and a few friends to run thru the obstacles and shlep thru the mud and it was AWESOME!!  I had no idea what to expect and was a little worried that my puny weak not so strong upper body strength would be a problem.  There were definitely a few obstacles that were a challenge but i’m happy to say i made it thru, completed all the obstacles and ran through the finish line with a  smile on my face {and apparently mud on my teeth}!   We sported a few crazy hair do’s and some warrior paint but there were some that went all out…tutus, wedding dresses…even umpa lumpas!!  Next year we WILL be rocking some sort of costume awesome-ness {Any suggestions??}  Saying that you are dirty when you cross the finish line is an understatement…there is mud in places you never thought possible. {all of my race clothes ended up in the trash!}  We “rinsed off” in the lake afterwards, most of us donated our shoes and headed over to the after party for a few beers, a little food and some live music.  Overall…a rockin good time and something we will Definitely be doing again next year!!

So you ready for next year?!?!  So much fun rollin in the MUD!

who’s got the Herb

Who’s got the Herb?!  Not that kind of herb silly…we are talking rosemary, basil, cilantro {my personal fav} & parsley.  The kind of herbs {pronounced heeeeer-bs} you cook with.  We are currently trying to grow our own little herb garden to not only cook with but to include in our daily smoothies {more on the smoothies and why I ♡ my Blender coming soon}.  Right now our little mini herb garden is in a bunch of random pots just hanging out on the back porch, which is jut not gonna cut it, so i felt the need to search for a little Herb Housing inspiration!!

How AMAZING are these wall hanging wood boxes?!?  I can barely stand how much i love them.  Now i just need to decide what wall in my house to put them on!!! LOVE lOve loVe…Love love!!

{Burlap & Blue}

Use an old hanging fruit basket for your herb collection…how brilliant is that!

Um…i think i just died and went to herb container heaven?!?!  A wall of herbs…one question though…how do you get to those lovely green beauties at the top there?  hmmm…

Combine all those herbs into one tiered arrangement.  Great way to grow them in a tight space AND with the combo of different sized galvanized pots, not only does it look fabulous you can accomplish this look on a budget!!

{The Vintage Wren}

Recycle that old over the door canvas shoe holder {or in my case…scarf holder} for your herb garden.

Indoor wall of herbs, right at your fingertips in the kitchen.  LOVE…and what a great way to bring some functional green inside!

{Design Squish}

Found anything that you just MUST try??  I will report back on the status of my herbal inspiration journey soon {as soon as i can make up my mind}.  Have you tried any creative and crafty ways to grow your favorite herbs?  Any herb growing tips??  Bring them on…this “new to gardening” girl can use all the help she can get!!

Happy Herbing

{Guest Post} Beautify: the Basics

Hello lovely ladies!!!! Its Shannon here, I am so pumped about helping Jillian with her AMAZBALLS blog and was honored when she asked me to help with the “beauty” section.  So state tuned for all things beauty, make-up, Shannon’s tips & tricks and make-up hauls.

Let me start out by saying I LOVE MAKE-UP!  I have been experimenting with make-up since I was a little girl watching my mom get ready.  She always let me put on a little blush and lip gloss and if I was really lucky some mascara!  I am fascinated by the way make-up can truly transform the way you look and FEEL!  So when Jillian asked me to help her I knew right away where I wanted to start… with the BASICS {gotta take care of that skin so you can keep playing with all that fun make-up!}  So the basics:  face wash, day & night moisturizers and eye creams.  So lets talk products, here are a few of my current favs:

NATURAL IS BETTER!  DUH right?!  As some of you know I have been living in California for the last year and the nutty crunchy hippy stuff has totally rubbed off on me.  I made the switch to the all natural face wash, eye cream and day/night creams of BURT’S BEES.

Step One: Wash it up

Ok so the amazingness of the citrus daily facial scrub is the best and I mean best daily facial scrub I have ever used… it has orange, grapefruit, ground almonds, oats and pecans. It smells so good you want to eat it!!! Once you have cleaned your face with it you feel so fresh and so clean clean!

Step Two: Lube it up {and eye cream}

Next on the list lube your face with the day or night cream.  Did you know that if you slather {yes slather} your face with night cream when you go to bed at night you will actually wake up looking younger! Yes ladies YOUNGER! All the yumminess in the night creams revitalize your skin and you wake up looking more awake & dewy!  Add a little eye cream at night to make your dark circles & puffiness disappear!  Totally crazy how a little moisturizer can do this but it is amazing!

I have been using the Radiance Night Crème, Radiance Day Lotion SPF 15, Radiance Eye Crème. LOVE THEM!!

Fun Fact: How many times have you seen girls with the “ghost face” you know the bright white face and dark body?!  SPF in your moisture and make up is a must for protecting your skin but not so good for pictures.  It reflects light {like the sun – duh} and makes your face look white! So if know your going to be taking pictures, skip the SPF.  {the only time you will ever hear me say that}

Remember Make-up is fun so always experiment! {and take care of your skin!!}

Monday Mantra: Come Alive

Monday Monday Monday…Is it just me or do they seem to sneak up on us faster and faster these days?!  I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  Ours was filled with well…mud {curious?!?…more on that later!}  There are times in all of our lives that we feel the urge to do more, to do different or to move on.  Times when we wonder what we were meant to be doing with our lives or if we are living up to everything we could be.  Come on now…I know its not just me that thinks about that sometimes.  I hope this week brings you clarity and direction in your life and hopefully brings you closer to fulfilling that which makes you the most complete.  Have a wonderfully inspiring week!

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs.
Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go and do that.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

Baby Pooping

Not only did I get to see my sweet momma this past weekend, I also had the absolute joy of spending a little bit of Mother’s Day with one of my favorite new mommy’s and her brand new baby TWINS!!!  Let me start off by saying in this case two is so much better then one…they are one two of the cutest things I’ve ever had the pleasure of snuggling with.  Just precious!

{Be sure to check out Brandy Craig Photography}

So my Mom and I are sitting on the couch in total baby heaven with these two sweet sleeping angels in our arms…how great is that…I mean look at them?!?   Now over the years I’ve started to notice a pattern when it comes to the little bitty angels, apparently I have an interesting effect on them…I like to think that this happens because they just love me so much and I soothe them into a totally relaxed state…but almost immediately after i scoop them up they just start…um…passing gas.  It never fails, I settle in with them in my arms and they just start to let it all go?!?  So of course with sweet little baby girl fast asleep in my arms just tearing it up, this leads us to the most logical next place in the conversation…baby pooping {I mean duh}.  So after our extended poo conversation, she sent me this article and i came extremely close to peeing a little in my pants when reading it.  Hilarious.

**WARNING: this article is not for the faint at heart. It gets down and dirty {pun intended} on the topic of the “Adventures of Baby Pooping”.  You are properly warned…Enjoy.

Qigong

We recently attended a 4 day seminar in Asheville called Qi Revolution and it was an absolutely amazing experience!  Before going to the seminar I really didn’t know much of anything about Qigong.  I knew it had something to do with Qi {energy} and some of it looked a bit like Tai Chi but that was pretty much all I had going into it.  While all that is true…there was so much that I didn’t realize about the practice.

The word Qigong broken down means:  Qi {or chi} life energy, life-force or energy flow & Gong {or kung} means work or practice.  So literally it means the work and practice of energy flow.  There were over 500 people attending the conference and right off the bat you could just feel the good energy and vibes in the space.  The seminar lasted for 4 days {we unfortunately had to leave on the 3rd day to get back to work} and was broken down into different segments throughout the day.  Some of the things we explored were:

  • Qigong forms & Qigong walking
  • Meditation
  • Breath Work & Energy Healing
  • Spiritual discussions
  • 5 elements {and how they relate to us as individuals & in relationships}
  • Food Healing

I’m still learning of course, but the information we discussed and the things we experienced have made this girl excited to learn more!!  As I’ve started to share my experiences with my loved ones I’ve been asked a lot of very interesting questions, some of which i can answer and a lot that i’m not so sure of yet.  One such question {thank you dad} was the difference between Tai Chi and Qigong. I am no expert on either {especially less about Tai Chi} but I found this quote that simplified things for me a bit.

“When you cultivate balance and harmony within yourself, or in the world — that is Tai Chi. When you work and play with the essence of energy of life, nature and the universe for healing, clarity and inner peace — that is Qigong.”

Dr. Roger Jahnke, OMD

I will go into more detail about some of the things in future blog posts {Check out the blog feature “Food Factoid” for info and tips on foods and food healing} but overall this experience was a life changer!  I learned so much, experienced things I never  thought possible and walked away from the weekend a totally changed person.  We have started to incorporate many of the things we learned over the weekend and have already started to see changes in our lives.  I can’t wait to pass on some of that inspiration to anyone that is interested!
Check out these links for more on the Qi Revolution Seminar and general information about Qigong.

Moms & Bracelets

You might remember {from this post} that I was the lucky winner of a fabulous online giveaway from the lovely Lindsey at Better After.  The giveaway was a piece of jewelry from the fantastic Pearl Blossoms.  The second I jumped on to the Pearl Blossom site I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my winnings.  Not only is her jewelry gorgeous, it gives you the opportunity to add a personal touch to the piece.  The bracelet I selected had my momma written all over it and just in time for Mother’s Day! {I’ve been sitting on this one for a while now…didn’t want to spoil the surprise!!}  I am so blessed to have an amazing mom that lives close and that I get to see often {not always often enough!}  Sadly she lost her momma this past year {my Nana} so mother’s day is now a little bitter sweet for us all.  So in honor of the wonderful women that have shaped my life, Pearl Blossom’s designer Julianne added three custom charms with images pulled from one of my most favorite wedding photographs.

Huge thank you to both Lindsey {Better After} & Julianne {Pearl Blossoms} for making this Mother’s day super special.  And a Happy belated Mother’s day to all the wonderful momma’s out there!

My mother is always with me…
She’s the whisper of the leaves
as you walk down the street.
She’s the smell of bleach
in your freshly laundered socks.
She’s the cool hand on your brow
when you’re not well.
Your mother lives inside your laughter.
She’s crystallized in every tear drop.
She’s the place you came from,
your first home…
She’s the map you follow
with every step that you take.
She’s your first love
and your first heart break…
and nothing on earth can separate you.
Not time, Not space…
Not even death…
will ever separate you
from your mother…
You carry her inside of you…

Mom…You ROCK!
I Love you!!

Ballerina Project

When we start talking about things we love, things that inspire us and things that make us happy, for me anything related to Dance definitely tops the list.  I grew up dancing, spent hundreds of hours of my childhood in the studio.  Blisters, Tutus, tap shoes and tights were just a regular part of my life.  As i’ve grown older unfortunately me dancing has fallen to the wayside BUT i will never loose my love for all things dance {The hubs knows that when So You Think You Can Dance is on tv I am NOT open for conversation or interruption!}  So when i stumbled on the blog The Ballerina Project I quite literally jumped out of my seat and did a little pas de chat!!  So gorgeous…I can’t even stand it!!!

Happy Dancing
