Flower Power

There is something about flowers that just makes you smile!  They smell delightful and really add life and cheer to a room.  Of course I am slightly bias in that I work with flowers as a part of my living {check out my Floral & Event Design business MOSS Floral} but I find it hard to believe that anyone could say different.  Now when it comes to arranging your flowers…it can be intimidating to some.  But fear not…there are countless {and easy} ways to get those blooms looking their best.  Sometimes in the world of flowers its best to think outside the box…er…vase.  For example…why not use that little model of a VW bug you have lying around the house to hold your sweet smelling goodies.  We put this groovy beauty together using a pretty standard inexpensive grocery store bouquet, a little bit of floral foam and a pair of scissors…doesn’t get much easier than that!!  Be sure to soak your floral foam really well before putting it into your container of choice, try to cut the stems of your flowers on an angle and be sure to keep the foam wet for a longer living arrangement.

So put on your thinking caps and try something other then a typical old vase for your next bunch of blossoms.  As long as your container can stand to get a little wet…your options are endless!  We want to see what creative containers you come up with…so send in your pics or descriptions of the crafty creative flower solutions you test out!!

*Now keep in mind there is no promise that this will always be 100% accurate…you have to consider the effect of shadows, etc in the pictures.  But what a fabulous tool to get you going in the right direction for all your color selection needs!!

Monday Mantra: Joy

“Ancient Egyptians believed that upon death they would be asked two questions and their answers would determine whether they could continue their journey in the afterlife. The first question was, “Did you bring joy?” The second was, “Did you find joy?”

The Secret Garden

Do you every have one of those moments where a childhood memory that you had filed away comes rushing back to you in a flash when you hear or see or taste something??  I was at my mom’s house the other day looking thru the bookshelves in her office when i stumbled upon a book from my adolescence that totally transported me to my younger days!  I snagged the book and decided to put it on the “pile of books I want to read” that currently resides next to my bed; thinking it was on the bottom of a list of a few books i’ve been meaning to read..and that i would eventually get to it.

The book, The Secret Garden {written by Frances Hodgson Burnett} was one of my favorites back in the day.  I have the OLD version that has the hand sketched and colored images and the inside cover has all sorts of cool little doodles pertaining to the events in the book…a total classic.  I picked up the book one night with the intention of just flipping thru the pictures to bring back some of those memories…but Folks…I did it again.  Stayed up WAY to late that night getting sucked in to the book I loved so much as a kid.

The Secret Garden starts out telling the story of a young spoiled little girl, Mary, who is waited on hand and foot by servants and has almost no interaction with her uninterested parents.  An outbreak of disease takes the lives of almost everyone in Mary’s house leaving her all alone.  She is finally discovered by soldiers passing through and is sent away to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven.  Master Craven lives on a beautiful large estate, but after his wife’s death, he closed up all of the rooms and is rarely there to enjoy it.  As Mary settles into her new home she hears rumors of a Secret Garden that no one has set foot in for over 10 years.  She decides that she will find this garden and make it her own secret little place.  As the story goes on Mary encounters many interesting characters and eventually grows out of her spoiled little ways.  It’s totally a simple and quick read and completely took me back to my younger days!

Happy Friday & enjoy your reading!

There is something so sophisticated about an Ombre palette and it’s quite the trend these days.  You see it in home decor, art, clothing even the inside of cakes!!  For those not up on the fancy lingo…Ombre is color that is shaded or graduated in tone; gradual shade change from light to dark {or dark to light}.  In a nutshell {how did i get in this nutshell} I’m a fan…Check out this ombre stair detail or these dyed fabrics used on lampshades or pillows from my fancy Pinterest boards!  Here is some lovely Ombre inspiration to start off your day…

Ombre is a really simple trend to pull off too!  So sample with a few accents in your home, give it a whirl for your next party decor or even break it out in the kitchen!

Monday Mantra: Happiness

“For every minute you are angry, you lose sixty seconds of happiness.”

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is impossible to go through life without feeling angry from one time to another {in fact if anyone has figured out how to accomplish this…please share}  Anger is a natural emotional response to a feeling of being wronged, offended or denied something.  So I guess that means it’s ok to feel angry just don’t let it dictate how the rest of your day goes!

Happy Monday!
